The majority of the records held by the Kansas State Archives from the State Legislature concern claims made against the State of Kansas, decided upon by a joint committee composed of members from both the House of Representatives and the Senate. This committee has gone under various names, including both the Committee on Claims and Accounts and the Joint Committee on Special Claims. This series spans the twentieth century. Other series of note, though much smaller in size, concern investigations made by the Legislature, some of which concerned impeaching state officials. The Legislature--either committees from the Senate, the House, or both--also investigated other state matters, such as the funds used to build the State Capitol or allegations made against state employees at the Topeka Insane Asylum. Most of these records date from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The State Archives also holds some committee minutes, including from the Legislative Council; petitions; photographs; and other miscellaneous records from the Kansas Legislature.

The first House of Representatives in the Kansas Legislature consisted of 75 members who were chosen for one year, and the first Senate consisted of 25 members who were chosen for two years. An amendment to the state constitution in 1873 raised the number of Representatives to 125 and the number of Senators to 40.
